Volcano pump
23.02.2009
checkpointmedia has designed and produced a "volcano pump" for the refurbished Geology Room at the Natural History Museum that will open in 2009.
The media station consists of a large flat screen standing on end and set into the wall, a PC, subwoofer and bass shaker. Initially, the screen shows a cross section of a volcano. Operating a mechanical pump fills the magma chamber with lava, the pump meets with greater resistance and the pressure increases inside the volcano. The climax is of course the eruption of the volcano that the visitor not only sees but also hears and feels by means of vibrations in the floor. Lastly, an extreme pull back shot shows the visitor how the ash cloud blocks the sun's rays over a long period of time and affects the climate all over the world.
